Bowen Therapy for Humans & Equines

Welcome!

Hi,I’m Imogen, welcome to my website.

I qualified as a Bowen Therapist back in 2016 and as an Equine Bowen Therapist in 2018.

Over the years my practice has evolved and these days a treatment with me is very much focused on finding a place of deep rest within yourself, stimulating restorative healing of your body and mind.

Living in an era that champions fast paced lifestyles, burnout has become a scarily common state of survival. The art of listening to your body before it has to start shouting has become a rare skill and being able to switch off the outside world and reconnect after a days work takes a huge amount of discipline if you possess a smartphone. (Yes of course I do have one and I also try and fail to use it less)!

So, wherever you are on your wellness journey, if remembering how to listen to your body and reconnecting with your authentic self sound appealing to you, please read on.

What is Bowen Therapy and how does it work?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands on, holistic treatment. A Bowen Therapist applies gentle ‘moves’ on the skin to disturb the fascia (connective tissue) below. The fascia is a web of fine, stretchy tissue that is intertwined throughout the whole body. It is the continuous connection between muscles, bones, tendons and every organ and system in the body.

Using specific moves on the fascia to affect the nervous system, the body is signalled to shift from its Sympathetic (fight or flight) to its Parasympathetic (rest and digest) Mode. In this state of calm, your body can put energy into repairing. Now, more specific moves can be applied to address your particular issues or for general whole body balancing.

‘It’s like a counselling session for my body’ K.S I love this quote from one of my wonderful clients, it gives a great perspective of how Bowen works.

What ailments can Bowen Therapy help with?

Muscular aches and pains

Skeletal alignment

Stress related illnesses

I won’t write an exhaustive list, but if you’re interested in working with your body holistically Bowen can help with most ailments.

How often is it needed and how much does it cost?

Frequency of treatments are tailored to individuals. Ideally, when having your first sessions you will have 3 treatments over a monthly period to fully allow your body to respond and re-balance. After that, we can discuss a plan to best suit you.

Treatments are £50 and sessions last approx 1 hr.

4-6 weekly maintenance treatments are very popular and will remain at £48.

Please note: I do require 24 hours notice when cancelling an appointment, failure to do so will result in the full fee being due.

How does it work with Equines?

Due to my commitments with our own horses and to enable me to focus on my human clients, I am unfortunately no longer able to offer equine treatments.

Kings of the parasympathetic mode!! I had just finished a treatment on the horse lying down and just started on the horse standing up.

I’ve kept these videos here for people to view out of interest – I obviously don’t have video footage of humans during a treatment and these guys assure me they don’t mind being recorded!

This is an example of a horse processing the treatment between moves. Showing a great release of tension through the yawning and processing is shown in the licking and chewing and strong blinking. Note: this horse had not been showing any signs of tension previous to the treatment, I had just ‘released’ his shoulder. A great example of how “we carry our issues in our tissues!”

Aftercare.

There will be variations for each individual, but mostly I hear reports of clients feeling blissful after a treatment!

It is worth noting the following and planning a treatment when you will have time to soak up the effects if possible.

Due to the increase in circulation and lymphatic activity your body may be detoxing after a treatment. This can make you feel tired or you may have a headache.

If there has been a big shift in alignment or release of tension you may feel this physically. The Therapy may continue to be processed for up to 5 days after the treatment so some patience may be required for things to settle. Gentle walks and plenty of rest and water are ideal.

Please avoid any physical stimulation of the nervous system for atleast 24 hours after your treatment. Ie no power shower or bath or shower that is very hot or very cold. Exfoliating, vaccinations, dentistry work, any other body work etc.

These type of activities won’t cause any harm but will likely ‘undo’ the Bowen Therapy or cause it to be less effective.

About me.

I live on a herb and salad farm in Norfolk with my husband David, our daughter Dora and an array of animals!

I grew up in Kent and from as far back as I can remember I have had a passion for all animals and an obsession with horses. I left school at 16 to work as a working pupil for an international event rider and have since worked and competed in many other spheres including international dressage yards, classical dressage, racing, pre-training and re-training of racehorses.

Since having our daughter in 2014, I had a change of pace in life and now find a great deal of satisfaction in helping horses and humans find their balance – it’s a great privilege to call this my job!
